Chakras are part of the human energy system. This system is non-physical though every bit as real as our organs, limbs and facial features. A chakra is something which is part of our anatomy, like our liver or kidneys. There are several chakras or psychic centres located in the spine. On a physical level they are each associated with a specific nerve plexuses and endocrine glands.
Chakras control the circulation of prana permeating the entire physical structure. Each chakra is a switch which turns on or opens up specific areas in the brain.
Mooladhara chakra is located at the cervix in the female body or at the perineum in the male body. This is the base chakra - seat of primal energy. In some systems or yoga traditions Mooladhara is said to be located at the base of the spine. It is associated with survival, the need for security and material possessions.
Swadisthana chakra is located in the spine behind the reproductive organs and focuses around emotions such as joy, sensuality, sexuality, intimacy and desire.
Manipura is in the spine behind the navel. This is the centre of self assertion and personal power.
Anahat is in the spine behind the heart and is associated with love and compassion.
Vishuddhi is located in the spine behind the throat pit and is the centre of communication.
Ajna - at the eyebrow centre. It is associated with intuition.
