Why do we chant Om?

The mantra Om (or Aum) is of special significance and a creative power in Hinduism and Yoga.

This sacred syllable represents the source of all existence. Om (Aum) is the breath of the Supreme or life breath of the Creator. When we chant Aum we bring down peace and light from above and create a universal harmony within and outside of us. It is said that the power of Om (Aum) transforms darkness into Light, ignorance into Knowledge, death into Immortality.

The Om chant should have a resounding bell-like sound. AUM - the sound “A” (ah) emanates from the base of the throat, the sound “U” (oo) is formed when the lips form a small circle and when the lips come together the final “M” (mm) is sounded. The three letters represent three states (waking, dream and deep sleep) the three deities:

     Brahma (Creation)
     Vishnu (Preservation)
     Shiva (Transformation)

Om symbolises everything: The divine; Brahman = absolute reality; World soul; The past, present and future (and what transcends time).

It aids in the removal of distractions and worldly thoughts, makes the mind serene and focused. When depressed, try chanting Aum 50 times. It is said we can increase our purity by chanting Aum 500 times a day.
